چکیده

In this paper, we study how datacenter energy cost can be effectively reduced in the wholesale electricity market via cooperative power procurement. Intuitively, by aggregating workloads and renewables across a group of datacenters, the overall power demand uncertainty of datacenters can be reduced, resulting in less chance of being penalized when participating in the wholesale electricity market. We use cooperative game theory to model the cooperative electricity procurement process of datacenters as a cooperative game, and show the cost saving benefits of aggregation. Then, a cost allocation scheme based on the marginal contribution of each datacenter to the total expected cost is proposed to distribute the aggregation benefits among the participating datacenters. Besides, we propose proportional cost allocation scheme to distribute the aggregation benefits among the participating datacenters after realizations of power demand and market prices. Finally, numerical experiments based on real-world traces are conducted to illustrate the benefits of aggregation compared to noncooperative power procurement.

Stochastic Optimization of Demand Response Aggregators in Wholesale Electricity Markets

This paper proposes a stochastic framework for demand response (DR) aggregator to procure DR from customers and sell it to purchasers in the wholesale electricity market. The aggregator assigns fixed DR contracts with customers based on three different load reduction strategies. In the presented problem the uncertainty of market price is considered and the risk of aggregator participation is ma...

CSEM WP 191 When it comes to Demand Response, is FERC its Own Worst Enemy?

The traditional approach to demand response of paying for a customer’s electricity consumption reductions relative to an administratively set baseline is currently being advocated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) as a way to foster the participation of final consumers in formal wholesale markets. Although these efforts may lead to greater participation of final consumers in tr...

تحلیل سودبخشی تشکیل ائتلاف نیروگاه مجازی و تجمیع‌کننده بار در شبکه توزیع فعال

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) play a key role in the Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) with environmental concerns. Their small scales and the uncertainty pertaining to intermittent generation of renewable resources are the major challenges of participating in the wholesale electricity markets. Based on the concept of Virtual Power Plant (VPP), the aggregation of heterogeneous DERs is p...

An Integrated Agent-Based and Production Cost Modeling Framework for Renewable Energy Studies: Preprint

The agent-based framework for renewable energy studies (ARES) is an integrated approach that adds an agent-based model of industry actors to PLEXOS and combines the strengths of the two to overcome their individual shortcomings. It can examine existing and novel wholesale electricity markets under high penetrations of renewables. ARES is demonstrated by studying how increasing levels of wind wi...

Electronic OTC Trading in the German Wholesale Electricity Market

Recent changes in the German energy policy initiated a deregulation process from a monopolistic to a competitive market, fundamentally changing the market structure, transaction relationships and trading processes. While the mutual exchange of electric energy has been a business activity between vertically integrated utilities for a long time, wholesale electricity trading in an open market onl...
